'I’ll donate some of my pocket money'

MINIHAUS children packed presents for the Münchner Tafel charity.

The children at Minihaus München, the IKC bilingual kindergarten and the Bilingual School Munich (ibsm) were very busy – together with their parents and (nursery) teachers they packed a total of 404 parcels in the last few days, to bring joy to children in need in Munich. A gesture which has particular importance in this Covid-marked year, project manager Andreas Hellmann feels. 'Initially we weren’t quite sure how parents, who might be affected by the Covid crisis themselves, would feel about the fund-raiser', Mr Hellmann says. Those involved were all the more delighted that people were even more helpful than last year: 'We exceeded last year’s total of parcels by more than 10 percent', Mr Hellmann is happy to report.

Minihaus München has been running its 'Weihnachten für Kinder der Münchner Tafel' [Christmas for Children at the Münchner Tafel] initiative since 2015. Local commitment is important for Andreas Hellmann. 'Don’t forget to look right outside your own front door – there is poverty in Munich, too.' This resulted in the idea of supporting the Münchner Tafel which was delighted with the initiative right from the start. Since then, parents, children and nursery teachers have been packing parcels for children whose parents are supported by the Münchner Tafel. In addition to non-perishable food and daily necessities, the cardboard boxes also include little presents for the children in the family.

To acquaint the children at Minihaus München with the topic, the teachers introduced the parcel initiative by explaining that in Munich, too, there are families who are poor and where children will not receive any presents for Christmas. Little Ferdinand was very touched by this. 'I told my parents that I want to donate some of my pocket money so that other children get Christmas presents, too.' Due to the Covid pandemic, it was unfortunately not possible to deliver the parcels to the Münchner Tafel in person, as had been done in earlier years. Tafel staff came to collect the parcels at Minihaus Tölzer Straße and will distribute them to families in need. Münchner Tafel spokesman Steffen Horak was very happy with the great readiness to help others and gave his heartfelt thanks to all parents and children.

After this stunning success Andreas Hellmann wants to continue the 'Weihnachten für Kinder der Münchner Tafel' initiative next year. Hopefully we will then be able to deliver the parcels in person together with the children. (jh)
